So the Saints won . . .

but the best part of the day was my daddy texting all the way from Africa "Who dat say who dat!"

I miss my dad, everyday. I wish I could make gumbo with him and watch the Who Dats on Feb. 7th.

sigh.

I love New Orleans. It took a long time for me to understand why I didn't love it the first time I went. I wasn't ready. I wasn't ready to understand my past, myself or anything.
It's time to go home.

The Rainy Monday Playlist

Today was not a glorious day for the Supernana. Not only did I not get my cooking project started, it rained. In Southern California, which always brings up memories of that awful song "It Never Rains in Southern California." Which of course gets stuck in my head, then I get all upset because it is in my head and I don't like it. So then I am forced to go to the trusty ipod and create a play list to get the bad song out of my head (and chase away my rainy day blues which have nothing to do with anything). So here it is:

Rolling Stones "You Can't Always Get What You Want"
Nina Simone "Ne Me Quitte Pas"
Laika Faitien "This Is For Albert"
Coldplay "Yellow"
Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers "Night in Tunisia"
Dexter Gordon "'Round Midnight"
Johhny Mercer "Moon River"
Serge Gainsbourg "Je Suis Venu Te Dire Que Je M'Envais"
Velvet Underground "Pale Blue Eyes"
Frank Sinatra "Fly Me To The Moon"
U2 " All I Want Is You"

sigh. I hate the rain!

Thanks!

You guys rock for sending me all the recipes. Project Feed Supernana will officially commence this Sunday. I will brave the wilds of the Farmer's Market and come back with some good stuff (Eggplant anyone? Thanks Sparrow!).

Don't expect too much too soon. Just as I decided to establish a routine, I also decided to move. oops. Given that my apartment will not be ready until March 1st and my lease is up Feb. 1st, I will be couch surfing for a month. I hope to wow my hosts with my new recipes and I promise to keep you updated with pictures and whatnot.

This is going to be fun! You also have the stories of my impending downsizing to look forward to, as I have promised myself (on the advice of a dear friend) not to let anything, useless, broken, or bad into my new place.

Dear readers, this has proven to be the start of very eventful year.

Now for all of you who read dear Savvy's blog. . . we need to start the campaign to get Savvy here in the spring to help me create a beautiful living space and bring good vibes back to Southern Cali. Any ideas?

Another Sunday . . .

I awoke to a terrible headache and another head cold. Those pesky kids just keep getting to me. I enjoyed my morning reading the newspaper and wandering the stalls of my neighborhood Farmer's Market.

After watching the documentary Food Inc. with my students last month, I couldn't help but be inspired to buy a ton of fresh , locally grown vegetables. What stopped me in my tracks of course is the truth: i have no idea what to do with them. I am on a mission to improve my quality of life. I recently discovered that I live like a man. A 50 year old single man who doesn't cook or clean much and has a life devoted to well . . .not much outside of work ( a certain man from Savannah who is now retired comes to mind. . . ).

True, I have friends and family that I spend time with. But there is, overall, no routine to my life. I have nothing to ground me. I thought that by cooking and setting up a nice home, I would at least have some reason to keep organized and maintain a little order in my life. I am, dear friends, a gypsy girl trying to find some structure.

My little apartment feels very much like a hotel. It is not nearly as bad as George Clooney's apartment in Up in the Air, but not too far off. I have stuff. Stuff I don't care about or use, but it keeps the place from being totally empty.

Given that I am on a limited budget, I decided that walking to the beach every weekend was a good way to establish routine. So that gets me two days. . .

Anyway, back to the food. I can't cook, I have limited funds, BUT I live in a great place for cheap healthy food and I'm pretty smart. So here's the challenge: send me stuff to cook. Easy, idiot proof and inexpensive are my only parameters. I never seem to get too invested in the recipes in the magazines that claim to be simple. I want fun stuff that's easy that I can bring into my regular everyday life. Mind you, I'm single, so I don't need to make elaborate dishes that can feed an army. Lets' just get me cooking.
And maybe, just maybe, I'll post some pictures.

I told 2009 to move out and not call me ever again.

So here it is the first post of the new year. I was inspired by my lovely Mama to write something. There are a great many changes in the life of Supernana. My dear brother is getting married to my dear friend, which works out well for all parties involved. I am happy to be on the groom's side though, as all I have to do is plan the surf trip bachelor party. Yes, I am for the second time in my life, serving as a "Best Man." Nice. No rings, flowers or dresses to worry about.

The New Year's Eve party was nice, as he proposed at midnight. I brought by partner in crime these days, a rather fabulous new friend Rebbecca. Becs and I decided to go the party together so we could start the year surrounded by love, rather than the usual bitterness and blah that single women in their thirties are prone to during holiday festivities.

In other news, the job situation is looking up, but I can't quite talk about it yet since I'm still sworn to secrecy. I am excited and good things are coming.

I'm on a quest to do new things each week in order to keep some perspective on my life and not go crazy. This week, I started my days with a disco dance party in my apartment and my car. Today I it was ABBA. It helped to be in a good mood before facing the kiddies and their ever changing teenage dramas. And I am quite sure I provided some much needed amusement for people in morning LA traffic.

Additionally, I have been inspired by AJ Jacobs and his Rationality Project. Check it out if you are interested. (you will have to google it, as the link does not want to work or copy and paste http://www.esquire.com/features/rationality-project-1108)

After a wild romp through my subconscious, I discovered that I have a great deal of irrational feelings an responses to things. I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers!
